Welcome to Class 2! Mrs Wrenn teaches in Class 2 with Miss Plaats and Mrs Dye.
In Years 3 and 4, children take exciting steps in their learning journey—growing in independence, learning new skills, and developing a genuine love for learning. Across the year, our curriculum comes alive through hands-on learning, rich discussions and lots of opportunities for collaborative learning. Whether we are diving into fascinating science investigations, creating imaginative artwork or getting lost in a great book, we encourage our children to ask big questions and embrace new challenges with confidence.
A day in Class 2
We begin each day with a spelling, focusing on one spelling pattern per week and practising these words using the Sounds and Syllables approach.
Daily reading lessons follow spelling, using a wide range of exciting books throughout the year. We use the VIPERS approach to practice our predicting, inferring, building vocabulary, explaining, retrieving, and sequencing skills.
In our daily maths lessons, we follow a mastery approach designed to build deep, lasting mathematical understanding for every child. This includes hands-on tasks to make abstract concepts visual and concrete, lots of discussion so that children can talk through their thinking, and independent practice to apply the skills we have learnt.
Our mornings finish with English lessons which draw inspiration directly from our reading. We explore essential writing skills, grammar, and punctuation in context, discovering how authors engage the reader, and then apply these skills to plan, draft, and publish our own extended pieces across a wide range of exciting genres.
In the afternoons, we dive into half-termly topics covering Science, History, Geography, Art, DT, Computing, French, PSHE, RE, and PE. Through these topics, children learn and master lots of new skills and make links across the curriculum.
Class information
Please make sure your child brings the follow items to school each day:
- A named water bottle which they can access and top up during the day.
- A healthy snack for morning break.
- Their reading book and reading record, which will be checked and changed weekly.
Pencil cases are not needed, as we provide all the resources the children need. It would be helpful if children could bring a bag to school in which to keep their belongings.
PE
Our PE days are Mondays and Fridays, and any changes to this will be communicated via Dojo. Please wear PE kit to school on these days, and tie up long hair. Earrings cannot be worn for PE, so please make sure earrings are removed before the start of the day or can be independently removed by your child, as school staff are not able to remove earrings.
Homework
Every Friday, children will be given a maths worksheet to complete at home. These are divided into three sections (A, B and C) with increasing difficulty. The children only need to complete one of these sections, and it is up to them to decide which of these sections they would like to complete. They will also be given a sheet of spellings to practise.
Please listen to your child read as often as you can. Just ten minutes every night can really help your child to progress in their reading. Even confident readers benefit from reading aloud as it improves their expression and allows opportunities to discuss the story with an adult.
Each child has a log in for Times Table Rockstars, and we would encourage them to use this to practise their times tables at home. It would be wonderful if you could help to support your child at home to learn their times tables, as being able to quickly recall these key facts will support their multiplication, division and fractions learning.
Please could the children bring their homework into school on Thursdays so that we can check their homework, and set new homework for the following week on Friday. Thank you.
