Geography
Our whole school approach to the teaching and learning of Geography is supported by Cornerstones Curriculum Maestro.
The planning provides teachers with creative and engaging lessons, involving high-quality resources to aid understanding of conceptual knowledge. Teachers will use questioning and retrieval practise to test knowledge and skills, and assess pupils regularly to identify those children with gaps in learning. Activities are selected and designed to provide appropriate challenge to all learners, in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion.
Our scheme of learning is designed so that children build upon the knowledge and skills of the previous years. As we are mixed-age classes, teachers use the knowledge and progression document whilst planning to ensure that children are producing outcomes and knowledge at the appropriate level.
Our primary geography curriculum offers a fully sequenced, progressive journey across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
The geography projects are sequenced to provide a coherent scheme that develops children's geographical knowledge, skills, and understanding across physical and human geography. The projects offer a broad coverage of world locations, key geographical concepts, and opportunities for practical fieldwork and cross-curricular connections.

In Year A, children study Local Explorers in Term 1, identifying the human and physical features of their immediate area. In Term 2, they move on to City Explorers, using maps and images to study landmarks. Term 3 concludes with Global Explorers, discovering continents, oceans, and places around the world.
In Year B, Term 1 begins with Map Masters, teaching practical map reading skills to explore the world. In Term 2, children study Journey to the Coast, examining why people visit coastal towns.
