Intent
Our Primary Science curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, encourage hands-on exploration, and foster a lifelong love for discovery. Beyond the classroom, we aim to enrich our pupils learning experience by connecting classroom concepts to real-world innovation through school-wide events and community involvement. Our teachers bring science to life by hosting STEM guest speakers and hands-on workshops, giving pupils a firsthand look at real-world scientific careers.
Alongside our weekly Science lessons, we also take part in National STEM Day and British Science Week. These events give children the opportunity to step into the shoes of real-world scientists, engineers, and technologists.
Core Curriculum Highlights
Our regular weekly lessons are structured to ensure every child develops a strong foundation in scientific inquiry and critical thinking:
Key Focus Area
What Pupils Learn and Do
Working Scientifically
Planning fair tests, gathering measurements, recording data using tables and charts, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
Living Things and Habitats
Exploring plant biology, human body systems, food chains, ecosystems, and environmental conservation.
Materials and Physics
Investigating material properties, forces, electricity, light, and sound through guided experimentation.
Implementation
Our whole school approach to the teaching and learning of Science is supported by Cornerstones Curriculum Maestro.
The planning provides teachers with creative and engaging lessons, involving
high-quality resources to aid understanding of conceptual knowledge.
Teachers will use questioning and retrieval practise to test knowledge and skills, and assess pupils regularly to identify those children with gaps in learning. Activities are selected and designed to provide appropriate challenge to all learners, in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion.
Our scheme of learning is designed so that children build upon the knowledge and skills of the previous years. As we are mixed-age classes, teachers use the knowledge and progression document whilst planning to ensure that children are producing outcomes and knowledge at the appropriate level. Working scientifically skills are embedded into lessons to ensure that skills are systematically developed throughout the children’s school journey. New vocabulary and challenging content are thoughtfully introduced through direct teaching. This is developed through the years, in-keeping with the topics.
Science in Early Years
In the Early Years, Science starts with natural curiosity and hands-on investigation. Through guided play, outdoor adventures, and guided questioning, our youngest pupils learn to observe their environment, spot changes in the world around them, and confidently articulate what they discover. Rich enhancement opportunities and Project Time learning bring these concepts to life, giving children the freedom to test ideas, collaborate, and investigate real-world questions in depth. By encouraging children to follow their curiosity and explore through their senses, we lay the crucial groundwork for future scientific learning.
Impact
Our Science curriculum ensures pupils build and retain a rich foundation of scientific knowledge and vocabulary. Children learn to think like scientists—exploring patterns, explaining observations, and tackling misconceptions with confidence. Through targeted, ongoing assessments, our teachers gain clear insights into every child's progress, allowing us to address learning gaps quickly and ensure all pupils thrive.
